The scientific literature is clear: the best way to take advantage of the role of stem cells in the body is to increase the number of circulating stem cells. More stem cells circulating in the blood means more stem cells available to migrate into various tissues and organs, which means more potential for renewal. But this does not mean that supporting stem cell release is the only way to tap into the potential of stem cells. Once stem cells have been released, they must be able to travel to the various organs of the body in order to do their magic. As the blood leaves the heart, it circulates through a network of vessels, which are at first as big as a quarter (the aorta), then become smaller, from the size of a pea to that of a peppercorn (the arteries), then even smaller, to the size of a human hair (the arterioles), and finally down to a diameter of less than three ten-thousandths of an inch (the capillaries). It is at the level of the capillaries that nutrients and oxygen are delivered to the cells.

After this delivery, the blood continues its course back to the heart through venules (small veins) and veins that lead back to the heart. At the junction between capillaries and veins is what we call the post- capillary venule: and it is at this site – and only at this site – that cells can migrate out of the blood into tissues. If stem cells cannot reach the post-capillary venules, they cannot reach organs and migrate into the organs. Without this migration step in the process, an organ cannot benefit from the renewing properties of stem cells. So the big question is: What can hinder blood flow to the capillaries and what can we do about it?

One of the main problems interfering with optimal blood flow to the capillary is a very insidious, poorly recognized problem, even though it is present in a large portion of the population. It is the low-level activation of the initial stage of blood clotting due to oxidative stress. When we have a wound, it is important to stop the blood loss in order to preserve life. The blood contains a specific molecule called fibrinogen that is converted to fibrin by specific molecules released by the wound. Fibrin agglomerates (gathers together into a ball) and forms fibrin mesh that plugs the area where there is blood loss, stopping the bleeding.

It has been discovered that oxidative stress – that is, the presence of free radicals in the blood – also activates the formation of fibrin mesh. So when there is oxidative stress, fibrin mesh is formed in the blood without a wound. This does not lead to full blood coagulation, but these fibrin meshes can reach sizes far larger than the size of a capillary. As they float in the blood, they can prevent the circulation of cells to the capillary level.
